After a public school education, Louis studied architecture at Rutgers College and was awarded his Bachelor of Science degree in 1896. In 1926 Louis became a Doctor of Humane Letters.
Later the young man entered the New York office of McKim, Mead & White, and during the several years he worked with the firm became skilled in draftsmanship and design. During his long connection with the firm of York & Sawyer (from 1910 until the time of his decease) Mr. Ayres collaborated on the plans of a number of important buildings in New York, including: The Federal Reserve Bank;; Guaranty Trust Company Building; Broadway Savings Bank; Boweiy Savings Bank; Greenwich Savings Bank; Nurses’ Home at the City Hospital; and the Guggenheim Dental Clinic. He was also identified with the following buildings of the firm erected in other cities: First National Bank Building, Boston; Royal Bank of Canada at Montreal; U. S Department of Commerce building, Washington, D. C„ (1931); Riggs National Bank at Washington; Legal Research Building at the University of Michigan and Gymnasium and Dormitories at Rutgers College.
