He received an architectural training in the United States and later in Europe where he studied six years.
On his return to the U. S. in 1875 the young man began work as a draftsman in Philadelphia. Ten years later he moved to Pittsburgh, and after a period of employment in the office of the late Andrew Peebles, in 1887 began practice in association with the late John Brennan under the firm name of Bickel & Brennan. During the next decade the firm designed a number of commercial buildings and warehouses in the city, among which were the German National Bank Building; the Columbia National Bank; Hartje Office Building, and a number of stores and warehouses.
After the partnership was terminated in 1898, Mr. Bickel carried on his work alone during the rest of his life.
