Glaser was born in Deutsch Rust, Bohemia on March 15, 1855.
At the University of Prague he studied mathematics and astronomy, and studied Arabic privately.
Although he was to make a career for himself in Arabic studies, he held a position as an assistant at the observatory of Vienna before becoming an explorer in southern Arabia.
He made four trips to Arabia. On the first (1883-1884), he crossed southern Arabia in various directions. The second was in 1885-1886, and on the third (1887-1888) he managed to reach Marib (the ancient Saba), and copied about one thousand previously undiscovered Sabean and Himyaritic inscriptions. His last journey (1892-1894) took him from Aden to the interior and he mapped the country from Hadramaut to Mecca, collecting inscriptions and manuscripts. He also identified many sites in Yemen and made studies of various Arabic dialects and the Sabean language.
