Gabriel Manigault was born in 1758 in Charleston, South Carolina, United States.
In Charleston several public buildings of Greek Revival Style were built from his plans, of which the present City Hall, erected about 1802 as a branch of the U. S. Bank is an outstanding example. He is also credited with the design of Society Hall at 72 Meeting Street, Orphans' Home Chapel on Vanderhorst Street, dating from 1802, and several of the city’s early mansions. Among these the best known is the three-story residence of James Manigault built at No. 350 Meeting Street in 1970. He may have designed Presqui'ile and William Blacklock House.
