Alan Gussow was born on May 8, 1931, in Bronx, New York, United States.
Gussow received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Middlebury College in 1952 and was a postgraduate at Cooper Union in 1953.
Gussow started his career as the instructor in painting and drawing at Parsons School Design, in New York City, where he worked from 1956-1968. Then he was a visiting artist and senior lecturer University California, Santa Cruz in 1975, and visiting professor Queens College, City University of New York in 1983. In 1984, he was the university scholar at the Iowa State University.
Gussow was also a visiting professor Middlebury College, Vermont, in 1986 and artist-in-residence at the American Academy in Rome, in 1986.
He was an adjunct associate professor at Pace University, in Pleasantville, New York, in 1977, and project director at Artists-in-Residence in Palisades Interstate Park, from 1975 to 1978. Gussow was also a co-director International Shadow project, in 1985, and regents professor at the University of California in Santa Cruz, in 1990. He became a member of art and environmental studies board, in 1992, and thesame year, he was an organizer of Pukamani for Reuben Tam, in Monhegan, Maine. He died from cancer May 5, 1997, in Piermont, New York.

1972On October 21, 1956, Gussow married Joan Dye. They had two sons, Adam Stefan and Seth James.
