In 1935 he graduated from Moscow State University Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics.
From 1935 to 1948 he was a head of a chair at Moscow University and from 1948 to 1955 he served as a director of the Institute of Mathematics, Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, and professor at Kiev University. He worked on general mechanical, the theory of elasticity and plasticity and the theory of vibration.
In 1943 he married Natalia Vladimirovna Zaporozhets.
