In 1901 Leonid Samuilovich graduated from Moscow University, the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics.
In 1908-1911, 1914-1915 years Leonid Samuilovich was a privat-docent and a master in applied mathematics of the faculty of physics and mathematics at Moscow University. In 1913-1914, 1919-1921 he worked in educational institutions of Tiflis. Since 1915 he was a privat-docent and a professor at Yuriev University. In 1918-1919 he was a professor at Voronezh State University. In 1921-1922 he was a professor at Baku Polytechnic Institute. Since 1922 he was a professor at Moscow Mining Academy and a professor at Moscow State University. In 1934 Leonid Smuilovich became a Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences. In 1943 he became an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and a laureate of the State Prize of the USSR. Unreasonably repressed, in 1936-1939 was in exile. After his return he worked at Moscow state University.
In 1920 Leonid Samuilovich married to Sofia Andreevna Petuhova (1899-1971). Sofia was a pediatrician. Leonid had a daughter, Tatyana Leonidovna Kandelaki (1921-1987). She was a philologist.
