From 1961 to 1966 he was an assistant professor of economics at Stanford University, an associate professor from 1966 to 1968, a professor from 1969 to 2004, a professor history from 1976 to 2004, the William Robertson Coe professor of American economic history from 1978 to 1994, a chairman department from 1979 to 1983, and a professor emeritus since 2004. From 1994 to 2002 he was a senior research fellow at All Souls College, Oxford, an emeritus fellow since 2002. From 1997 to 2002 he was a professor of economic and economic history University Oxford.
