(Publication Date: December 30, 2003 John le Carré has ear...)
Publication Date: December 30, 2003 John le Carré has earned worldwide acclaim with extraordinary spy novels, including The Russia House, an unequivocal classic. Navigating readers through the shadow worlds of international espionage with critical knowledge culled from his years in British Intelligence, le Carré tracks the dark and devastating trail of a document that could profoundly alter the course of world events. In Moscow, a sheaf of military secrets changes hands. If it arrives at its destination, and if its import is understood, the consequences could be cataclysmic. Along the way it has an explosive impact on the lives of three people: a Soviet physicist burdened with secrets; a beautiful young Russian woman to whom the papers are entrusted; and Barley Blair, a bewildered English publisher pressed into service by British Intelligence to ferret out the document's source. A magnificent story of love, betrayal, and courage, The Russia House catches history in the act. For as the Iron Curtain begins to rust and crumble, Blair is left to sound a battle cry that may fall on deaf ears.

(“There’s a price to pay, and the price does tend to be on...)
“There’s a price to pay, and the price does tend to be oneself.” To the young trainees at Sarratt, George Smiley is “A Legend of the Service.” To Ned, however, he is something even more. Decades earlier—before a mole nearly destroyed the Circus and well before the Cold War yielded to glasnost—Smiley rescued Ned from disgrace and gently mentored him through a long and respectable career. Now, as he listens to Smiley address a new generation of spies, Ned ponders his own clandestine life, the unruly passions and personalities he’s encountered—and the doubts he’s kept locked away. Brilliantly charting the collision between global politics and individual frailties, The Secret Pilgrim is quintessential John le Carré—thoughtful, prescient, and wholly unforgettable.

(Tom Baker stars in this BBC Radio 4 Full-Cast dramatizati...)
Tom Baker stars in this BBC Radio 4 Full-Cast dramatization of John le Carré's powerful thriller. In the third year of perestroika, London publisher Barley Blair is sent a manuscript from Moscow. Exposing Russian nuclear threats as a sham, the information - if it's genuine - could shatter East-West relations. Jazz-loving, hard-drinking Blair is hardly the spymasters' idea of the perfect agent, yet they are forced to send him to Moscow to make contact. But the Cold War thaws when Barley meets Katya, the beautiful Russian intermediary who is equally skeptical of state ideology. Mere pawns in a deadly game of international espionage, they nevertheless represent the breakdown of hostilities and a future which poses a huge threat to the entrenched professionals on both sides. Both a gripping spy saga and a poignant love story, The Russia House delivers all the excitement and tension expected from the master of espionage fiction. This BBC Radio 4 adaptation was dramatized by René Basilico. The cast includes: Barley Blair: Tom Baker / Niki Landau: Danny Webb / Yekaterina Orlova (Katya): Valentina Yakunina / Wellow: Simon Roberts / Merridew: David Howarth / Ned: John Rowe / Harry: Michael Turner / Walter: John Webb / Clive: Pip Torrens / Bob: Bruce Boa / Wicklow: David Bannerman / Zapadny: Constantine Gregory / Cy: Eric Meyers / O'Mara: Geoffrey McGivern / Wintle: Paul Brooke / Paddy: Christopher Fulford / Goethe: Boris Isarov / Russell Sheriton: David Healy / Brady: Ed Bishop / with Kate Binchy, Brian Bowles, Mary Chater, John Harwood, Ravil Isyanov, Neville Jason, Frances Jeater, Don McCorkindale, Mac McDonald, Richard Marner, Ted Maynard, Jillie Meers, Seva Novgorodsev, Andrew Pozhitkova, Katya Pozhitkova, Hana-Maria Pravda, Yuri Stepanov, and Simon Treves.

New York: Avenel Books, 1983. Octavo, padded leather boards imprinted in red and gilt on spine and cover, beautifully marbled endpapers, All Edges Gilt, without jacket, as issued; 665 pp. Near Fine, with very small micro-touches in several places, distinct toning to the margins of the now decades-old pages. A very handsome copy. See scan. Interestingly, this piece bears two ISBN numbers: ISBN 0517624095 is stamped in gilt on the rear cover, while the copyright page bears only ISBN 0517422840. The former is probably correct; the latter - on the CR page - appears (elsewhere) to refer to a 1988 Random House issue, which was not in the fine binding of this 1983 Avenel edition. Random House is not otherwise mentioned on the CR page, though Avenel did, of course, work with and through Crown Publishers and Coward-McCann / Putnam Publishing in offering this, and those are credited with Avenel on the CR. The renegade ISBN remains a mystery, to me. In any case, a very nice example of a collection of three complete and unabridged Le Carre titles in a nicely conceived binding. L-34n

(Nothing is as it was. Old enemies embrace. The dark stagi...)
Nothing is as it was. Old enemies embrace. The dark staging grounds of the Cold War—whose shadows barely obscured the endless games of espionage—are flooded with light; the rules are rewritten, the stakes changes, the future unfathomable. John le Carré has seized this momentous turning point in history to give us the most disturbing experience we have yet had of the frail and brutal world of spydom. The man called Ned speaks to us. All his adult life he has been in British Intelligence—the Circus—a loyal, shrewd, wily officer of the Cold War. Now, approaching the end of his career, he revisits his own past—an intricate weave of suspicion, danger, boredom and exhilaration that is the essence of espionage and of his own sentimental education. He invites us on a tour of his three decades in the Circus, burrowing deep into the twilight the Circus, burrowing deep into the twilight world where he ran spies—"joes"—from Poland, Estonia, Hungary, men and women to whom he gave his most profound love and hate. Along the way we meet a host of splendid new characters and reacquaint ourselves with the legendary old knights of the Circus and the notorious traitor, Bill Haydon. Telling the story of his own life's secret pilgrimage, Ned illuminates the brave past and the even braver present of George Smiley—reluctant keeper of the flame—who combines within himself the ideal and the reality of the Circus. Smiley, Ned's mentor and hero, now gives back to him the "dangerous edge" of memory which empowers him to frame the questions that have haunted him—and the world—for thirty years, and that haunt us still. The Secret Pilgrim holds us galvanized by its storytelling genius, by its perceptions of the moral conundrums at the heart of our society, and by its singular grasp of the myths and fantasies underlying the conflicts of nations. It is John le Carré's most magnificent novel.

(Frightening, heartbreaking, and exquisitely calibrated, J...)
Frightening, heartbreaking, and exquisitely calibrated, John le Carré's new novel opens with the gruesome murder of the young and beautiful Tessa Quayle near northern Kenya's Lake Turkana, the birthplace of mankind. Her putative African lover and traveling companion, a doctor with one of the aid agencies, has vanished from the scene of the crime. Tessa's much older husband, Justin, a career diplomat at the British High Commission in Nairobi, sets out on a personal odyssey in pursuit of the killers and their motive. A master chronicler of the deceptions and betrayals of ordinary people caught in political conflict, le Carré portrays, in The Constant Gardener, the dark side of unbridled capitalism. His eighteenth novel is also the profoundly moving story of a man whom tragedy elevates. Justin Quayle, amateur gardener and ineffectual bureaucrat, seemingly oblivious to his wife's cause, discovers his own resources and the extraordinary courage of the woman he barely had time to love.

("You are either good or bad, and both are dangerous." It...)
"You are either good or bad, and both are dangerous." It would have been an easy job for the Circus: a can of film couriered from Helsinki to London. In the past the Circus handled all things political, while the Department dealt with matters military. But the Department has been moribund since the War, its resources siphoned away. Now, one of their agents is dead, and vital evidence verifying the presence of Soviet missiles near the West German border is gone. John Avery is the Department's younger member and its last hope. Charged with handling Fred Leiser, a German-speaking Pole left over from the War, Avery must infiltrate the East and restore his masters' former glory. John le Carre's The Looking Glass War is a scorching portrayal of misplaced loyalties and innocence lost. With an introduction by the author.

Smiley, wrestling with retirement and disillusionment, is summoned to a secret meeting with a member of the Cabinet Office. Evidence has emerged that the Circus has been infiltrated at the highest level by a Russian agent. 'Find the mole, George. Clean the stables. Do whatever is necessary.' Reluctantly Smiley agrees, and so embarks on a dark journey into his past a past filled with love, duplicity and betrayal. Starring the award-winning Simon Russell Beale as Smiley, and with a star cast including Anna Chancellor, Alex Jennings, Kenneth Cranham, and Bill Paterson, this epic dramatisation brilliantly depicts the complicated moral dilemmas of those who practice post-war espionage and illuminates the murky corners of le Carré's classic spy thriller - the first in the Karla trilogy.

(This three-in-one set of le Carré thrillers about late co...)
This three-in-one set of le Carré thrillers about late cold war spycraft has wit, atmosphere, and intelligence to die for. In le Carré's most autobiographical novel, A Perfect Spy, Rick Pym, a con artist Dickens might have invented (except that he's based on le Carré's dad) raises his son, Magnus, to be the perfect gentleman for the spook trade. Magnus writes to explain himself to his son, Tom; le Carré wrote the book to explain his own scalawag dad to himself, and burst into tears when he finished the novel. In The Russia House, set in 1987, a Soviet dissident physicist drops a secret manuscript to Barley Blair, a boozy loser of a British book publisher, to alert the West that the evil empire is about to collapse of its own absurd weight. Can Western spies trust the dissident? Just how safe is the "safe house" where Barley parleys with his sexy Russian contact, Katya? Where should Barley's loyalty lie, with love or country? The Secret Pilgrim is almost a short-story collection. (That's why it was broken into three separate audio versions: The Fledgling Spy, The Spy Who Came of Age, and The Spy in His Prime.) Ned, a British spook who Barley troubled in The Russia House, invites le Carré's legendary spy George Smiley to lecture his new class of recruits. Smiley's remarks alternate with Ned's reminiscences of his own covert adventures, from the sublimely ridiculous to the scathingly scary. The new kids have no idea what tortuous moral torments await them, but le Carré gives us an idea.

"Gripping and moving. . . . A marvelous return to the John le Carre of old, with all the captivating characters, finely rendered landscapes, and messy complexities that have always powered his best work." -San Francisco Chronicle Hailed everywhere as a masterpiece of suspense, John le Carre's return to Africa is the story of Bruno Salvador (aka Salvo), the 25-year-old orphaned love child of an Irish missionary and a Congolese woman. Quickly rising to the top of his profession as an interpreter, Salvo is dispatched by British Intelligence to a top-secret meeting between Western financiers and East Congolese warlords, where he hears things not intended for his ears--and is forced to interpret matters never intended for his reawoken African conscience. By turns thriller, love story, and comic allegory of our times, The Mission Song recounts Salvo's heroically naive journey out of the dark of Western hypocrisy and into the heart of lightness. "Entertaining... Salvo may be the author's most naive creation to date, but he is also one of the most fascinating and engaging... The atmosphere of intrigue builds nicely and convincingly."-Baltimore Sun "An incendiary tale... Le Carre's understanding of how the world ticks is, as always, machete sharp." -USA TODAY "To categorize Le Carre, as many do, as a 'spy' novelist is to do him a disservice; he uses the world of cloak-and-dagger much as Conrad used the sea--to explore the dark places in human nature.' -Washington Post Book World "Le Carre's insight into the dense, dangerous nexus of corporate and government interests is chillingly assured." -New York Times Book Review "Engaging, masterfully told... (In The Night Manager, John le Carre's first post-Cold War...)
In The Night Manager, John le Carre's first post-Cold War novel, an ex-soldier helps British Intelligence penetrate the secret world of ruthless arms dealers. "Le Carre is the equal of any novelist now writing in English." (Guardian). "A marvellously observed relentless tale." (Observer). At the start of it all, Jonathan Pine is merely the night manager at a luxury hotel. But when a single attempt to pass on information to the British authorities - about an international businessman at the hotel with suspicious dealings - backfires terribly, and people close to Pine begin to die, he commits himself to a battle against powerful forces he cannot begin to imagine. In a chilling tale of corrupt intelligence agencies, billion-dollar price tags and the truth of the brutal arms trade, John le Carre creates a claustrophobic world in which no one can be trusted. "Complex and intense...page-turning tension." (San Francisco Chronicle). "When I was under house arrest I was helped by the books of John le Carre...they were a journey into the wider world...These were the journeys that made me feel that I was not really cut off from the rest of humankind." (Aung San Suu Kyi). "One of those writers who will be read a century from now." (Robert Harris). "He can communicate emotion, from sweating fear to despairing love, with terse and compassionate conviction." (Sunday Times (on The Spy Who Came in from the Cold)). "Return of the master...Having plumbed the devious depths of the Cold War, le Carre has done it again for our nasty new age." (The Times (on Our Kind of Traitor)).

From the New York Times bestselling author of A Delicate Truth and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy "Fielding and Jebedee were dead, Steed-Asprey vanished. Smiley—where was he?" John le Carré's second novel, A Murder of Quality, offers an exquisite, satirical look at an elite private school as it chronicles the early development of George Smiley. Miss Ailsa Brimley is in a quandary. She's received a peculiar letter from Mrs. Stella Rode, saying that she fears her husband—an assistant master at Carne School—is trying to kill her. Reluctant to go to the police, Miss Brimley calls upon her old wartime colleague, George Smiley. Unfortunately, it's too late. Mrs. Rode has just been murdered. As Smiley takes up the investigation, he realizes that in life—as in espionage—nothing is quite what it appears.

(From Publishers Weekly The master of the spy novel has di...)
From Publishers Weekly The master of the spy novel has discovered perestroika , and the genre may never be the same again . Le Carre's latest is both brilliantly up-to-date and cheeringly hopeful in a way readers of the Smiley books could never have anticipated. Barley Blair is a down-at-heels, jazz-loving London publisher who impresses a dissident Soviet physicist during a drunken evening at a Moscow Book Fair. When the physicist attempts to have Barley publish his insider's study of the chaotic state of Soviet defense, British intelligence steps in. Barley, after extensive vetting by both MI5 and the CIA, is made the go-between for further invaluable information, and in the process becomes involved with the physicist's former lover, Katya. The portraits of American and British intelligence agents are, as always, wonderfully acute, and the plot is a dazzling creation. Le Carre's Russia is funny and touching by turns but always convincing, and the love affair between Barley and Katya, subtly understated, is by far the warmest the author has created. But the singing quality of The Russia House , written at the height of le Carre's powers, is its pervading sense of the increasing waste and irrelevance of ongoing cold-war machinations: "That is . . the tragedy of great nations. So much talent bursting to be used, so much goodness longing to come out. Yet all so miserably spoken for that sometimes we could scarcely believe it was America speaking to us at all." 350,000 first printing; BOMC main selection. (In these three masterly novels, John le Carre brings to t...)
In these three masterly novels, John le Carre brings to thrilling life the shadowy battlegrounds of the Cold War - a war of ambiguous victories and hidden defeats orchestrated from the corridors of the Circus and Moscow Centre, and staffed by an army of moles and lamplighters, scalphunters and pavement artists. Stalking each other through this twilight landscape are the incomparable George Smiley and his ruthless opposite number, codenamed Karla, the Soviet case officer who has been slowly masterminding the Circus's ruin. Their extraordinary duel not only raised the spy novel to new heights of realism and complexity, it also constitutes one of the major triumphs of contemporary fiction, confirming John le Carre as a profound chronicler of the post-war world and a novelist of unfailing humanity.

Penetrate the secret world of ruthless arms dealers and drug smugglers who have risen to unthinkable power and wealth. The sinister master of them all is an untouchable Englishman named Roper. Slipping into this maze of peril is a former British soldier, Jonathan Pine, who knows Roper well enough to hate him more than any man on Earth. Now personal vengeance is only part of why Pine is willing to help the men at Whitehall try to bring Roper down.... Our Game: With the Cold War fought and won, British spymaster Tim Cranmer accepts early retirement to rural England and a new life with his alluring young mistress, Emma. It is also the country which on December 31, 1999, will gain full control of the Panama Canal. Seldom has the weight of politics descended so heavily on such a tiny and unprepared nation. And seldom has the hidden eye of the British Intelligence selected such an unlikely champion as Harry Pendel - a charmer, a dreamer, an evader, a fabulist, and presiding genius to the house of Pendel & Braithwaite Co. Limitada, Tailors to Royalty, formerly of London and presently of Panama City. Yet there is a logic to the spy's choice, for everybody who is anybody in Cental America passes through Pendel's doors. He dresses politicos and crooks and conmen. His fitting room hears more confidences than the priest's confessional. And when Harry Pendel doesn't hear things as such - well, he hears them anyway, by other means. In a thrilling, hilarious audiobook, le Carré once again effortlessly expands the borders of the spy story to bring us a magnificent entertainment straight out of the pages of tomorrow's history.

In this era of NSA electronic snooping, the game goes on. In the 1970s, Le Carre fashioned the remarkable tale of a double agent in the British Intelligence Service aka MI6. This is not James Bond stuff, it's the real deal. The daily intel grind where nothing is as it seems (I'm borrowing from the text a bit). After the 2nd World War, the Brits & Americans had to worry about the KGB in Soviet Russia. Le Carre takes us into the highest levels of spydome, Britain's "Circus" in London. The American CIA begins to wonder about "leaks" to the KGB. Turns out they were right. As a teaser, see the 2012 film "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" which I review separately. Cutting to the chase, if you enjoy spy thrillers, you will want to read and own this trilogy. It will be with you for a long time.
