From 1916 till 1917 Katherine attended College of Agriculture in Moscow, Russia. Also, in 1922 she finished Agricultural College of Berlin in Germany and got a bachelor's degree. Moreover, in 1931 Esau attained Doctor of Philosophy degree, graduating from University of California in Davis, California, United States.
Katherine worked as a member of the experiment station staff at Spreckels Sugar Company in Davis, California, United States from 1924 till 1928. Also, beginning from 1928 to 1931 she held the post of an assistant at University of California in Davis. What is more, from 1931 till 1937 Esau worked as an instructor of botany and junior botanist. Since 1937 to 1943 Katherine Esau served as an assistant professor and assistant botanist. It is imporatnt to note, that from 1943 till 1949 she was an associate professor and associate botanist. Moreover, from 1949 to 1963 Esau served as a professor and botanist.
From 1963 till 1965 Katherine worked as a professor of botany at University of California in Santa Barbara. In 1965 she became emeritus professor of botany. Also, in 1965 Esau served as a special lecturer at University of Texas, Botanical and Plant Research Institute. Moreover, in 1960 she was a Prather Lecturer at Harvard University. In addition, Katherine worked as a national lecturer at Sigma Xi in 1965 and 1966. In 1968 the woman was a lecturer at University of Wisconsin in Madison and in 1973 Katherine lectured at American Academy of Arts and Sciences. On June 4, 1997 she died in Santa Barbara, California, United States.
