The first edition of Japanese Politics was written more than 15 years ago. Obviously, much has happened sine then. Today as a result of phenomenal economic growth sustained throughout the 1960s, Japan is counted among the superpowers in terms of economic capability. This is a new opportunity to reexamine the nature of Japanese democracy.

Ike, Nobutaka was born on June 6, 1916 in Seattle, Washington, United States. Son of Yasuji and Tsuya (Tanaka) Ike.
Bachelor of Arts, University Washington, 1940; graduate student, University Washington, 1940-1941; Doctor of Philisophy, Johns Hopkins, 1949.
He wrote many books on the Japanese political system. Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, he was forcibly relocated to Camp Harmony, but was released in summer 1942 due to his willingness to assist the United States Navy with translation work. After the war, he resumed his studies and got his Doctor of Philosophy from Johns Hopkins University.
From 1958 until retirement in 1984, Ike worked at Stanford University, on the faculty of the Department of Political Science.
He served as department chair during the mid-1960s.
