(The Olympic champion skater recalls his life, from a chil...)
The Olympic champion skater recalls his life, from a childhood spent fighting a disease that stunted his growth to eventual triumph in the 1984 Olympics and the later revelation that he had contracted testicular cancer.
(Scott Hamilton has experienced the heights of accomplishm...)
Scott Hamilton has experienced the heights of accomplishment and the depths of disease, from winning the Gold to becoming a cancer and brain tumor survivor. But through his successes, struggles, and setbacks, Hamilton has never lost his trademark humor and honesty. More important, he has never lost his faith and optimism. How does he keep smiling?
In The Great Eight, Scott uses stories from his international career and personal life to describe the eight secrets that - through commitment and repetition - have helped him "clear the ice," get back up, and "smile like Kristi Yamaguchi."
(Go for the win! Achieve excellence and be better than you...)
Go for the win! Achieve excellence and be better than you’ve ever been! In his years as a professional ice-skater, Olympic Gold Medalist Scott Hamilton learned to embrace the mind-set of working hard to "beat" the competition. But it seems competition has gotten a bad rap these days. We’ve bought into the belief that it is unfair to participants to rank performance. Yet competition is in fact a good thing because it’s about working toward excellence. Finish First is a wake-up call for business leaders, entrepreneurs, spouses, parents, and even students to stop settling for mediocre and begin to revitalize their intrinsic will to achieve excellence and go for the win. Most of us feel we were made for something more, but we’re often afraid to allow ourselves to be competitive because we think our finishing first might somehow rob others of their chance to shine. This book encourages the hidden potential, the champion within all of us, to come out - which eventually brings our family, marriage, career, business, and the world around us the greatest possible good.
Scott Scovell Hamilton is an American retired figure skater and author. He was a four-time world champion and the 1984 Olympic gold medal winner in men’s figure skating.
Background
Scott Scovell Hamilton was born on August 28, 1958 in Toledo, Ohio, United States. She is an adopted son of Ernest Hamilton, a professor, and Dorothy Hamilton, a professor. He was raised in Bowling Green, Ohio. Scott has two siblings, older sister Susan, his parents' biological daughter, and younger brother Steven, who was also adopted.
Education
Scott Scovell Hamilton attended Kenwood Elementary School. He also studied at Bowling Green State University.
Scott Scovell Hamilton began his career in the world of figure skating at the age of 13, trained by former Olympic champion Pierre Brunet. In 1976 Hamilton left the ice, citing the financial burden to his parents. But a year later, Dorothy Hamilton died of cancer; seemingly propelled by her memory, Scott Hamilton returned to figure skating with a drive to succeed. Helen and Frank McLoraine stepped in to provide financial support for Hamilton to continue his training.
Hamilton quickly won several important championships, including the Norton Skate Championships (which later became Skate America), and the National Figure Skating Championship. In 1980, he was elected by his fellow athletes to carry the American flag in the opening ceremonies at the Olympic Games in Lake Placid, New York, a tribute to his ability to overcome a number of obstacles to take part in the games. He is credited with redirecting the sport of figure skating away from fashion and toward athleticism.
By the time Hamilton reached the Sarajevo Olympics, he'd won the United States and World Championships every year as of 1981 and would go on to win 15 consecutive championships by 1984. Though struggling with his short and long programs, he won the 1984 Olympic Gold Medal with a combined score that included the compulsory competition, putting him ahead of his closest competitor, Brian Orser.
Shortly thereafter, he announced his plans to skate professionally with Ice Capades, and two years later he cofounded Stars on Ice, a highly successful touring company. Hamilton also competed in World Professional Championships, and in 1987 began an alternate career on television as a figure skating analyst for CBS. In 2001 Hamilton retired from the highly successful Stars on Ice. In 2006 he was the host of the FOX television program Skating with Celebrities. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for Special Olympics International. In 2010 Bio Channel premiered a television special about the life of Hamilton, Scott Hamilton: Return to the Ice.
Scott Scovell Hamilton is a United States Olympic gold medalist also known for his sports commentary and for raising cancer awareness. In 1990, Scott had the double honor of being induced into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame and to the United States Olympic Hall of Fame. During the same year, the Make-A-Wish Foundation recognized Hamilton as the first ever Celebrity Wish Granter of the Year.
