He studied at the Government School of Design (Ireland) and shortly after graduating in 1850, migrated to the United States.
Beginning his career in Newark, the young man carried on a general practice for a number of years in 1893 he closed his office to become a member of the Washington office of the U. S. Supervising Architect, and until 1895 engaged in designing a number of Post Offices, including those at Buffalo and Kansas City.
In1900 Mr. O'Rourke ,took his two sons into partnership, Bernard (1857-1919) and William P. (d.1921), and during the last phase of his career in Newark acquired a reputation as a specialist in Catholic church and insti- tutmnal work. He designed the Church of the Immaculate Conception at Camden, N.J, St. John s Church, Orange, N. J. and at Newark the Church , considered his outstanding work, completed after his death by Isaac E. Ditmars
