The photographer operated T & R Annan & Sons in Glasgow, and was commissioned by Glasgow City Improvement Trust to document Glasgow slums (1868-77).
Known for his studio's photogravures, Annan also worked with calotypes, collodion wet-plate negatives, albumen prints and carbon prints. Besides documenting Glasgow's slums, architecture, citizens, etc., he reproduced works of art in photographs and shot portraits in a straightforward style.
