Gay Block began photographing her own affluent Jewish community in Houston in 1973. She expanded this study to include Jewish senior citizens in south Miami Beach, focusing with affection on the "bubbies" or grandmothers that (she attests) she wished she herself had had as a child.

Gay Shlenker Block was born on March 5, 1942 in Houston, Texas, United States.
Gay Shlenker Block attended Newcomb College, New Orleans, from 1959 to 1961 and the University of Houston School of Architecture (1971-1973).
Gay Shlenker Block was a teacher of photography at the University of Houston Fine Arts School. In 1978 Block received the NEA Photographer's Fellowship Grant. Also, she received a grant from Congregation Beth Israel, Houston, in 1975 to create a 16mm film entitled "A Tribute to Spirit: The Beth Israel Experience," completed in 1976.
Working with medium and large formats in black-and-white, Gay Shlenker Block has made portraiture her main concern, focusing primarily on Jews in America. She began the series with her own community of origin, and has continued the work in other communities throughout the USA.
