First employed as a wholesale merchant, Theodor Hofmeister took up photography in 1895. Along with his brother they produced their first exhibit the following year, and in 1902 Theodor Hofmeister began teaching photography. Until 1914 he and his brother were at the center of the Hamburg school of photography.
In their earliest days they produced postcards, then carbon pigment prints. Later Theodor Hofmeister handled most of the printing and Oskar made the exposures, although they always discussed compositions together.
