J. Dudley Johnston was a businessman in Liverpool and moved to London in 1911. A frequent contributor to the Photographic Journal, he began his involvement with photography in 1880, with a real commitment occurring about 1904.
J. Dudley Johnston served on the RPS council from 1916 and acted as its president in 1923 and 1929-31. From 1923 until his death he was curator of the RPS Print Collection and was elected an Honorary Fellow in 1923. He was an important historian of RPS.
Initially, J. Dudley Johnston worked in gum-bichromate and platinum prints; in the 1930s he mastered the complicated thiocarbamide process used in making transparencies, becoming an acknowledged expert.
