Harold Jones earned a diploma from the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Art, New Jersey, in 1963, a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Maryland Institute of Art (now The Maryland Institute College of Art), Baltimore, in 1965 and a Master of Fine Arts in Photography/Art History from University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, in 1972.
The coordinator of the Photography Program, Department of Art, University of Arizona, Tucson (since 1977), Harold Jones was the founding director of the Center for Creative Photography at the university (1975-1977). He was adjunct associate professor of art history at Queens College, New York City, in 1974-1975, and director of Light Gallery in New York City from 1971 to 1975. He was first associate then assistant curator of George Eastman House in Rochester, New York, during 1968-1971.
