Jonas Kalvelis was born on March 27, 1925, in Kupiskis district, Lithuanian SSR (now Kupiskis district, Lithuania).
Jonas Kalvelis studied land organization at the Agricultural Training College in Kaunas (now Aleksandras Stulginskis University), Lithuania, from 1953 to 1958.
Since 1954 Jonas Kalvelis has been head of the photo laboratory of the Institute of Planning of Water Resources in Kaunas. Prior to that, he was a technician for the Institute of Forestry in Kaunas, 1948-1954.
Of his work, he states: "Nature is by itself the author of its own art. The only remaining thing is to be able to notice it and convey it to others." But the best in the work of Calvelis is, without a doubt, the cycle of "Dune". He is not the first photographer to discover the beauty of the sand formations of this character.
Jonas Kalvelis died on May 27, 1987 in Kaunas, Kauno Apskritis, Lithuania.
Jonas Kalvelis has been a member of the Lithuanian SSR Society of Art Photography since 1970 and an associate of the Fédération Internationale d'Art Photographique (FIAP) since 1976.
