Krims was born on August 16, 1942, in Brooklyn, New York City, New York, United States; the son of Leo and Sally (Leibowitz) Krims.
Krims studied at Stuyvesant High School in New York. In 1964, he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Cooper Union. In 1967, Les was given a Master of Fine Arts degree from Pratt Institute.
Krims began his career as an assistant instructor in photography and printmaking at Pratt Institute in 1966. A year later he took the position of a teacher of photography at Rochester Institute of Technology. Then in 1969, Les was appointed as an assistant professor and an associate professor in 1975 at Buffalo State College. Since 1980 he has been a professor at that college.
In addition to his teaching career, he has published numerous offset works, including "Fictcryptokrimsographs" and "Making Chicken Soup". Krims has also published original print portfolios such as "Idiosyncratic Pictures" and "Porsche Rainbows". He edited his photobooks, including "The Little People of America", 1971, "The Deerslayers", 1972, "The Incredible Case Of The Stack O'Wheat Murders".
In 2004, he had a two-month exhibition at Laurence Miller Gallery in New York titled "Fictions 1969-1974". He had a retrospective at Galerie Baudoin Lebon in Paris in 2007 and has been part of a dozen other group exhibitions of photography in the years 2000-2007.
