During World War I McLeish was a naval aerial photo-pioneer and the official POW photographer. Between wars he freelanced as a photo-illustrator of world publications such as National Geographic.
In 1898 Donald taught photography at Regent Street Polytechnic in London, United Kingdom. From 1909 to 1914 he was employed by Newman Travel Talks, giving film and slide lectures in the United States. McLeish designed and built a 4 x 5 plate camera that is now in the permanent collection of the Science Museum in Kensington, London.
