After traveling abroad to Austria, Italy, France, and Holland, Ward Muir took up photography about 1890, continuing his travels while photographing and writing for the press. He was a major force in the Practical Correspondence College, an association for "training photographers in the art of making the camera pay." A regular contributor to Amateur Photographer, he served with the Royal Army Medical Corps during World War I, editing their Gazette. Aside from his photojournalism, he also wrote novels and short stories.
