Sonneman received a BFA from the University of Illinois, Champaign, in 1967 and an MFA from the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, in 1969.
Since 1975 she has taught at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Sonneman has also taught at Cooper Union College of Art and Architecture, New York City (1975-78, 1970-71), City University of New York (1972-75) and Rice University, Houston, Texas (1971-72).
The photographer won a grant from the Institute for Art and Urban Resources of New York in 1977 and a Boskop Foundation Grant in the Arts in 1969.
