Tônnies emigrated to Konradsminde, near Norlund, Denmark, to work as a porcelain painter and glassgrinder. In 1855 he was employed at the glass factory in Aalborg, and in 1856 he bought Fritsches Studio and started his own photography business. He became a Danish citizen in 1870. Tônnies created a very large business, which was taken over by his son Emil in 1899. The photographer produced a great collection of topographical recordings from the area around Aalborg. He also took photographs of soldiers in uniform. especially at the time of the Second Schleswig War in 1864. Like Georg Emil Hansen, Tønnies travelled to the area and photographed many Danish soldiers before they went off to fight.
