John Yang received a Bachelor of Arts in 1954 from Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, and a Bachelor of Arts in 1957 from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. He studied at the San Francisco Art Institute in 1951.
Before becoming a photographer full-time, Yang worked as an architect and continued in that practice until 1978. Having retired as an architect in 1978, John Yang was a self-employed as a photographer.
John Yang belonged to the Sierra Club, N.Y.-N.J. Trail Conference, the Palisades, New Jersey Nature Association, and was a patron of the Mohonk Trust.
