Chao-Lun Tseng was born on May 25, 1899 in Changshan, Hunan, China. He was native of Hsianghsiang, Hunan, China.
Chao-Lun Tseng was taught Chinese classics by private tutors from 1905 till 1912. He attended St. James' Primary School in Changsha, China in 1912. Then he was transferred to Yali (Yale-in-China) Middle School, where he studied from 1913 till 1915.
In 1915 Chao-lun Tseng entered Tsing Hua College in Peking, China and graduated it in 1920. He went to the United States of America for further education and studied in Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.), United States from 1920 till 1926.
Chao-Lun Tseng held many offices in various Chinese Students' organizations (including the Chinese Students' Alliance, Science Society of China, Chinese Engineering Society, etc.)
He worked as chief chemist of the Experimental Arsenal in Canton, China from 1926 till 1927. Then Chao-Lun Tseng went to Nanking, China in 1927, from which year on he has devoted himself to the teaching of chemistry and promotion and organization of chemical research in China associate professor of Organic Chemistry and China Foundation Professor for the Improvement of Teaching of Science, National Central University, Nanking, China from 1927 till 1931.Chao-Lun Tseng was a head of the Department of Chemical Engineering in National Central University from 1929 till 1931.
