Walbrook was born on November 19, 1896 in Vienna, Austria; the son of Gisela Rosa (Cohn) and Adolf Ferdinand Bernhard Hermann Wohlbrück.
Walbrook studied with the director Max Reinhardt.
Walbrook began his acting career, performing in German film serials in the 1920s and early 1930s. He starred in "The Secret of Castle Elmshoh", 1925, "Salto Mortale", 1931, "The Five Accursed Gentlemen", 1932, "A Woman Who Knows What She Wants", 1934, "Tomfoolery", 1936 and others.
In 1937, Anton made his American film debut, reshooting dialogue for "The Soldier and the Lady". Then he settled in England, where he changed his name from Adolf to Anton and continued working as a film actor, making a speciality of playing continental Europeans. He played Otto in the first London production of "Design for Living" at the Haymarket Theatre in 1939 and performed in 233 plays.
In additon, Anton starred in "Victoria the Great", 1937, "Sixty Glorious Years", 1938, "Gaslight", 1940, "Dangerous Moonlight", 1941, "The Red Shoes", 1948 and others. Also he appeared in French films such as "La Ronde", 1950, "L'affaire Maurizius", 1954 and "Lola Montès", 1955.
He retired from films at the end of the 1950s and in later years appeared on the European stage and television.
