Arthur studied at Chefoo School (China Inland Mission) and Modern Bath Technical School. Later he graduated from Bristol University.
Arthur de Carle Sowerby explored North China on behalf of the British Museum and the United States National Museum (Smithsonian Institution) doing extensive research work upon the natural history of the country and making large collections. He led the "Shensi Relief Expedition" during the revolution in 1911-1912.
