In 1920, he obtained his Bachelor of Sciences by the Oberlin College, and in 1926, his Doctor of Philosophy By the University Cornell, defending a thesis on the floral anatomy of Juglandaceae.

He was professor a year in Cornell, and in a later year worked at the University of Illinois, Urbana. Return to the Smith College where taught from 1928 to 1941. In 1945, it works in the University Ducknell until his retreat in 1968.
He published more than 40 publications consecrated mainly to Juglandaceae.
