Bray contested Thirsk and Malton in 1959. He was first elected Member of Parliament for Middlesbrough West in a 1962 by-election, serving until 1970. He was then Member of Parliament for Motherwell and Wishaw from October 1974 to 1983, and for Motherwell South from 1983 until retirement in 1997.
