Thou hast broken Rahab in pieces as one that is slain; thoti hast scattered thine enemies with thy strong arm. Psalm I xxxviii. 10. PREFACE. To THE READER. Reader, out of desire to the good of God speople, and in respect of these troublesome times, it was thought not altogether unfit by some friends to print these few notes, in reading of which thou art desired not to expect much completeness of dependency or style, as not being ordered to the press by I he Author himself, but by a very weak hand; whatsoever, therefore, thou shalt find herein profitable, that improve; if any thing otherwise, that cover by Christian love, and the God of love be with thee. A men. Rise up, 0L ord, and let thine enemies be scattered. NUMB. x. 35. THIS chapter delivereth itself into four parts :in the first part the author speaketh of the silver trumpets, and of the matter and use of them; secondly, he sheweth the march of the children of Israel under their several standards ;thirdly, he speaketh of a conference had between Moses and Hobab, verse 29; and, fourthly, you have Moses prayer: And they departed from the mount, and the ark of the covenant of the Lord went before them in the three days journey, c. And it came to pass when the ark set forward, that Moses said, Rise up, OL ord, and let thine enemies be scattered. When they removed, still they prayed. When they set forth with their army they used those words, A rise, OL ord, and let thine enemies be scattered. When they returned with their army at the latter end of the year, or at any time, they said, Return, OL ord, unto the many thousands of I srael. You have here their going forth: A rise, OL ord, c. Excerpt: ... THE FREENESS OF THE GRACE AND LOVE OF GOD TO BELIEVERS DISCOVERED, IN REFERENCE TO 1.--THEIR SERVICES AND SUFFERINGS. 2.--THEIR CONSOLATIONS. 3.--THEIR SALVATION AND ETERNAL GLORY. TOGETHER WITH THE EXCELLENCY OF THE FEAR OF GOD. THE GOODNESS AND PLEASANTNESS OF BROTHERLY LOVE. THE WISDOM OF HEARING THE VOICE OF THE ROD. REPENTANCE THE ONLY WAY TO PREVENT JUDGMENTS. IN SEVEN SERMONS. 1671. TO THE EEADER. Thk labours of this Reverend Author (now with God) both in print and in preaching, have already praised him in the gate, and make his name and memory still remain and continue like a precious ointment, notwithstanding the vain endeavours of some, to make both himself and writings ridiculous; in which kind, though they may be abundantly repayed, since a late Author makes some on all sides guilty of the like; yet there is cause to fear (whatsoever innocent design may be pretended by those Kitty men) that religion itself may be contemned and slighted by such practices. It is hoped that these Sermons will give no occasion for such cavils, but that they may be of use to some persons, to direct and confirm them in the good old ways of God, though they may want much of those advantages, which it may be the Author's own hand would have bestowed upon them. And upon that account the reader is desired not to be offended, though some things may not be so exact or plain as might be wished, nor to impute it to the Author in the least, but to look upon it only as the fault of the transcriber or publisher. Yet hoping that notwithstanding these disadvantages, some may (through the blessing of God) reap profit and benefit by them, they are here published and submitted to the judgment of the candid reader. REMAINS, BEING EIGHT SERMONS, 1.--ON MAN'S BLESSEDNESS. 2.--AFFECTIONS RIGHTLY PLACED. 3.--HOW TO WALK WITH GOD IN OUR CALLING. 4.--OF GOOD AND BAD COMPANY. 5.--THE CARNALITY OF PROFESSORS. 6.--WHAT OUR WORK IS, AND HOW TO BE DONE. 7.--SOUL RESIGNATION INTO THE HANDS OF GOD. 8.--THE DIGNITY AND DUTY OF GOD'S CALLED ONES. A.D. 1673. This series of Sermons which was published in 1673, under the title of Bridge's Remains, was designed by the Author for the press, as appears by the marginal notes, except the eighth Sermon, which was the last the author preached, and which was taken down in sbort-hand, and published by his son-in-law, after they were perused by the Rev. William Greenhill. REMAINS. SERMON I. ON MAN'S BLESSEDNESS; OR, THE BLESSED MAN. " Many there be that say. Who will shew us any good! Lord, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us."--Psalm Iv. 6. In this psalm we are taught, by David's example, how to carry and behave ourselves in times of danger. By David two things are done, which are the parts of the psalm. First, He prays, ver. 1. Secondly, He believes; which appears by, His exhortation to his enemies, ver. 2--6. The profession of his faith, see ver. 7 to the end. Which profession of his faith is illustrated by an argument drawn a dissimili, ver. 7, " Many say," &c. but, " Lord," &c. By his own security in this time of trouble, verse 8. " Many there be that say:" that is, not with the mouth only, but by the language of their lives and practices, for even those that are dumb do say, " Who will shew us any good?" who will shew us, or will make us to see or enjoy any good? The words note an ardency of their desire, " Who will shew us any good?" But I say, " Lord, lift thou up the light of thy countenance (or face) upon me;" that is, ...

DELIVERED IN TEN SERMONS. 1667. VOL. III. TO THE READER. Courteous Reader,--These Tea Sermons, lately taken by an expert band, as they fell from the mouth of the sweet preacher of them, contain so great a variety of heavenly matter, so much of the very marrow and quintessence of the gospel, that thou wilt no sooner begin to read them, but wilt presently find that the heart of the reverend author of them hath lain long asoke in the blood of Jeius, and that he hath been no stranger to his very bosom love. Buy them therefore with what speed thou canst, and read them over diligently, it will be a good bargain for thy soul, and one of the richest commodities that ever thou meetedst with at so cheap a rate. It is put into so small a letter and bulk, purposely for thy better accommodation, and that not only in the ease of thy purse, but principally that thou mayest make it as well thy pocket as thy heart's companion, wherever thou goest. Farewell. CHRIST AND THE COVENANT. SERMON I. CHRIST'S PERSONAL EXCELLENCIES THE OBJECT OP OUR LOVE. "If ye loved me ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father, for my Father is greater than I."--John Xiv. 28. These words are part of the last sweet sermon which our Saviour preached unto his disciples before his death and departure from them; wherein he labours to allay their sorrow and grief upon the occasion of his departure: therefore he tells them at the 2nd verse, "In my Father's house are many mansions;" and at the 3rd verse, "I go to prepare a place for you." Then he tells them at the 16th, 17th and 18th verses, that "he would send them another Comforter;" and "I will...

(Publishers feel much pleasure in being able to assure the...)
Publishers feel much pleasure in being able to assure their friends that in this first collected edition of the works of William Bridge, there is contained in it, without doubt, the whole he ever published. When at the particular request of several respected individuals they first devoted their attention to the work, although by their business they are much acquainted with the publications of the Puritans, they had the idea that the two generally known quarto volumes, entitled, KT he Works of the Rev. William Bridge; contained nearly all he had written: and there not being in existence any authentic list of his writings, they much fear that this edition would have been far from complete, had it not been for the very valuable assistance rendered throughout the publication by their esteemed friend Frederick Silver, Esq., who certainly possessed the most complete collection of the original editions, and who voluntarily surrendered them all for the purpose of reprinting herein. Several other friends have also kindly aided the work in its progress ;amongst whom they are permitted to mention the Rev. Dr. Bliss, the Rev. Prebendary Home, Joshua Wilson, Esq., Thomas Jolley, Esq., A. Hanbury, Esq., W. Pickering, Esq. The Trustees also of the British Museum, and the Trustees of Dr. Williams s Library in Red Cross Street. (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.) He studied at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, receiving an Master of Arts
A native of Cambridgeshire, the Review William Bridge was probably born in or around the year 1600. in 1626. Foreign a short time in 1631, he was a lecturer (preacher) at Colchester, put in place by Harbottle Grimstone and Robert Rich, 2nd Earl of Warwick.
This was very much against the wishes of William Laud, then Bishop of London, who complained of the influence then held by Richard Sibbes and William Gouge, clerical leaders of the Feoffees for Impropriations.
From 1637, he lived in Norwich as Rector of Street Peter Hungate, Norwich and Street George"s Church, Tombland, Norwich. He came into conflict with Matthew Wren, bishop of Norwich, for Nonconformity.
He went into exile in Rotterdam, taking the position left vacant by Hugh Peters. Charles I of England upon hearing from Archbishop Laud that Review
Bridge had "gone to Holland", "..rather than he will conform" replied, "Let him go: we are well rid of him." In 1643, he preached in front of Charles I of England, making a direct attack on the Queen.
He was Minister at the Old Meeting House Norwich for several years right up until his death.
