Blaauw was born in London on 25 May 1793. His father William Blaauw was a Dutch immigrant. His mother Louisa Puller was daughter of Christopher Puller of Woodford.

He was educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford, where, taking a first class in classics, he graduated Bachelor of Arts in 1813, and Master of Arts
In 1815. Blaauw lived at Newick in East Sussex, and founded the Sussex Archaeological Society in 1846. He was the editor of the society"s journal, Sussex Archaeological Collections, until 1856, when the eighth volume was issued. And was its honorary secretary until 1867.
Blaauw died on 26 April 1870.
Blaauw married first Harriet King in 1825.
He was elected a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London in 1850, was treasurer of the Camden Society for many years, and was a member of other learned societies.
