Hamenstädt earned her Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Bonn in 1986, under the supervision of Wilhelm Klingenberg.

Her primary research subject is differential geometry. She was then a Miller Research Fellow at the University of California, Berkeley and an assistant professor at the California Institute of Technology before returning to Bonn as a faculty member in 1990.
