After graduating in business from York University, Virmani studied filmmaking and theatre at New York’s Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York City.
He wrote and starred in the hockey comedy Breakaway (dubbed into Hindi as Speedy Singhs), followed by Doctor Cabbie (2014), where he was a writer, lead actor and producer. Doctor Cabbie broke the Canadian record for audience numbers on opening day. He was next in The Steps, which premiered at TIFF in 2015.
Vinay has travelled the country with Reel Canada, screening Breakaway and Doctor Cabbie to high school students and recent immigrants studying English.
Virmani was born and raised in Brampton, Ontario. He is of Indian origin and his mother tongue is Punjabi.
He is the son of Ajay Virmani, an Indo-Canadian businessman and Indian film producer. He received his early education from the Second City School in Toronto and graduated from York University.
Virmani"s first role was in a 2008 Canadian short film.
In 2011 he co-wrote and starred in Breakaway (dubbed into Hindi as "Speedy Singhs"). Vinay then starred in the Hindi film, David, directed by Bejoy Nambiar. Vinay’s next film was the social comedy Doctor Cabbie, produced by Bollywood superstar Salman Khan and co-starring Big Bang Theory star Kunal Nayyar.
The film was released in Canada on 19 September 2014 in 55 cinemas.
lieutenant earned $350,452 on its opening day at the box office and Doctor Cabbie became the second highest-grossing film in Canada. The film earned $702,000 over the weekend.
Vinay"s next project was "The Steps". with Parenthood star Jason Ritter and James Brolin, the Canadian indie dramedy from director Andrew Currie was made in northern Ontario.
