Taber was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twentieth United States Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Thomas Jackson Oakley and served from November 5, 1828, to March 3, 1829. He died in the village of Roslyn on Long Island at age 76 and was buried at the Friends Cemetery in Westbury. He was the father of Stephen Taber, also a Congressman.
He worked in agriculture before becoming a member of the New York State Assembly in 1826.
