Not illustrated. 1889 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER VI.--APOSTOLIC SUCCESSION. No one acquainted with history is likely to deny that the Christian Church, in a condition more or less pure, has existed in the world since the great Pentecost recorded in the Acts of the Apostles, and that one generation of Christian ministers has succeeded another since the fishermen of Galilee became "fishers of men." It is no less true that every generation of ministers has, with few exceptions, been formally invested with office by others who held the office before them. It is alike scriptural and becoming, that those about to take upon them the important charge of feeding the flock and of watching for the souls of men, should be duly and publicly set apart to office by those who have authority to do so. The rite of ordination is still maintained in every important section of the Church visible, many thinking it right to conform to the precedent presented in Scripture, and some thinking that without it the continued existence of the Church could not be maintained. It is natural in itself, as well as desirable for other reasons, that those who themselves teach what is right and true should be satisfied that the same sound principles are held by their successors, and that they should communicate to them that public designation and sanction which they themselves derived from their predecessors. But the most solemn appointment derived from human hands does not enable a minister to dispense with that inward call which comes from God. Church officers, whose one object is to perform the duties of their office and to be useful, will not, so far as the manner of appointment is concerned, trouble themselves with more than this, that they have received the inward call, and have been set apart to office in...

(Excerpt from Derry and Enniskillen in the Year 1689: The ...)
Excerpt from Derry and Enniskillen in the Year 1689: The Story of Some Famous Battlefields Fields in Ulster Some men have been tempted at times to wish that the great events of 1689 were blotted out of the History of Ireland. Even if it could be done, that would be a rather unmanly way of dealing with facts. Far better is it, as it seems to me, to look them in the face, and to know what actually occurred during that celebrated period of our annals. This is a contribution to that end. There are in existence four original accounts of the Siege of Derry, and two of Enniskillen, all of them written by men who took an active part in the scenes which they describe. Few now living have enjoyed the opportunity of reading all of these; and yet the least valuable of them preserves something of interest not recorded in any of the others. It has been the design of the present writer to combine in one consecutive story the most important facts contained in all the original documents, as well as to weave into the narrative a variety of other details given in contemporary pamphlets, which have now for years fallen out of sight. For the use of these documents I am indebted to the Rev. Dr. Killen, of Belfast, who, in the kindest and most handsome manner, gave me free access to the valuable collection in the Assembly's College. (This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

The son of Hugh Witherow, a farmer at Aughlish, near Dungiven, County Londonderry, and his wife Elizabeth Martin, he was born at Ballycastle on 29 May 1824.
He received his early education at Ralliagh church school, and then studied with James Bryce.
Later on he went to Belfast Academy and the Royal Academical Institution. In 1839 he entered the collegiate department of the Academical Institution, and here, with the exception of a session at Edinburgh, all his college days were spent. In 1865, on the opening of Magee College, Londonderry, he was appointed by the general assembly professor of church history and pastoral theology.
In 1878 Witherow was elected moderator of the Irish general assembly, and in 1884 a senator of the royal university of Ireland.
He was made honorary Doctor of Divinity in 1883 by the Presbyterian Theological Faculty, Ireland, and Doctor of Laws by the royal university in 1885. He died on 25 January 1890 at Londonderry, and was buried in the city cemetery there.
Witherow married Catharine, daughter of Thomas Milling of Maghera.
