Wright was born in Paisley in November of 1809.

He studied at the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin, and qualified as a doctor in 1832. Soon afterwards he settled at Cheltenham, and graduated M. D. at St Andrews in 1846.
Wright published a number of papers on the fossils which he had collected in the Cotswolds, including Lias Ammonites of the British Isles. Wright was born in Paisley and studied at the Royal college of Surgeons in Dublin. In 1846 he moved to Cheltenham, where he became medical officer of health to the urban district, and surgeon at Cheltenham General Hospital.
After his death part of his fossil collection was sold to the British Museum.
