Degree in 1965 and was employed at the Faculty of Law directly upon graduation, first at the Department of Criminology and Criminal Law (1965–1977) and then at the Department of Public and International Law. She was one of the founders of the field of women"s law as an academic discipline at the University of Oslo in 1975, and became head of department for the new Department of Women"s Law (a sub-department of the Department of Public and International Law) in 1978. In 1978, she obtained the dr.juris degree.
In 1988 she was appointed by the King-in-Council as Professor of Law.
She received an honorary doctorate at the University of Copenhagen in 1986 and several other accolades. She was the daughter of art historians Nic.

She played a central role in the establishment of the organisation Legal counselling for women and the Centre for Women"s Studies at the University of Oslo, and was a member of the city council of Oslo 1967-1971.
