Toni Collette is an Australian actor, producer, singer, and songwriter known for acclaimed work in film, television, and theatre. Her major performances include Muriel's Wedding, The Sixth Sense, Little Miss Sunshine, United States of Tara, Hereditary, Unbelievable, and The Staircase.
Background
Toni Collette was born on November 1, 1972, in Blacktown, a western suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. She grew up as the eldest of three children in a working-class family; her father, Bob, worked as a lorry driver, while her mother, Judith, worked in customer services. At fourteen, after appearing in a school production of Godspell, she decided to pursue acting. She left school at sixteen and joined the Australian Theatre for Young People before undertaking formal training at the National Institute of Dramatic Art.
Education
At sixteen, Collette joined the Australian Theatre for Young People, where her early theatrical development led toward professional acting. She began a three-year course at the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney in 1991, but left after approximately eighteen months to accept professional theatre work, including a Sydney Theatre Company production of Uncle Vanya in 1992.
Career
Collette began her professional career in Australian theatre, working with the Q Theatre Company and the Sydney Theatre Company. Her early stage work included A Little Night Music, Uncle Vanya, and King Lear, and she also performed with Belvoir Street. She made her feature-film debut in Spotswood in 1992, earning an Australian Film Institute nomination for supporting actress. Her breakthrough came with Muriel's Wedding (1994), in which she played Muriel Heslop; the performance won her the AFI Award for Best Actress and brought her international recognition. She continued to work in Australian and international productions, receiving further AFI Awards for Lilian's Story (1996) and The Boys (1998), while appearing in films including Emma, Clockwatchers, Velvet Goldmine, and 8½ Women. Her performance as Lynn Sear in The Sixth Sense (1999) earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She subsequently appeared in The Wild Party on Broadway and in films such as Shaft, The Hours, About a Boy, Japanese Story, In Her Shoes, Little Miss Sunshine, and The Night Listener. Her television work expanded with the lead role of Tara Gregson and multiple alter egos in United States of Tara, for which she won the Primetime Emmy Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in 2009. She continued to alternate among film, television, theatre, voice work, and producing, with later credits including The Way, Way Back, Enough Said, Krampus, Hereditary, Unbelievable, Knives Out, I'm Thinking of Ending Things, Nightmare Alley, The Staircase, Mafia Mamma, and Juror No. 2.
