Meghan Elizabeth Trainor is a Grammy-winning American singer, songwriter, and record producer, who wrote, recorded, performed and produced three independently-released albums before she turned 18. Trainor is known for such smash hits as Lips Are Moving and All About That Bass. She has received several awards and nominations, including a Grammy Award, four ASCAP Pop Music Awards, and two Billboard Music Awards.
Background
Ethnicity:
Meghan’s mother is of one half French-Canadian, one quarter Polish, and one quarter Irish, descent; she also has remote English and Guernsey [Channel Islander] ancestry on her French-Canadian side.
Meghan Elizabeth Trainor was born on December 22, 1993, in Nantucket, Massachusetts, the United States, to Kelli and Gary Trainor. Her parents were both jewelers. Trainor has an elder brother named Ryan, and a younger brother named Justin.
Trainor spent her childhood surrounding herself with music, learning to play various instruments and writing her own songs.
Education
Born in a musical family, her father being a music teacher and musician, it was only natural for Trainor to be blessed with the skills. Since the age of six, she accompanied her father for singing at a local church. By the age of 11, Trainor began writing music and started working to make a career as a recording artist.
Encouraged by her father, Trainor began exploring various musical genres and instruments including piano, guitar, and bongo drum. She was just 12 when she began performing as part of the band Island Fusion that included her aunt, brother, and father. The band performed covers, soca music, and Trainor's compositions.
At the age of 13, she penned her first original song, Give Me a Chance. Same time, the family moved to North Eastham, Massachusetts. Trainor gained her education from Nauset Regional High School where she studied guitar and was a substitute cheerleader. She even sang and played trumpet in a jazz band for three years.
She was a two-time enrollee (2009 and 2010) in the Berklee College of Music's five-week Performance Program, and she made the finals of the program’s songwriting competition. Instead of accepting the full scholarship offered by Boston’s Berklee College of Music, Meghan spent her late teens flying back and forth between her home and Los Angeles to team up with producers and artists on songwriting sessions.
Trainor was 18 she had recorded three albums of her own material. Her parents were huge supporters, and they would take her to regional songwriting conventions throughout her teen years. The conventions were a chance for songwriters to get their material heard, and one such session led to the first big step in Trainor’s career.
When she was still in high school, singer/songwriter Meghan Trainor landed a deal with a Nashville music publishing company, Big Yellow Dog Music. She started writing songs for artists from all corners of the music world. With the deal in place, the first big piece of Trainor’s dream fell into place and a realization took hold that she could make a career out of her music. Before long, Big Yellow Dog was sending Trainor-penned songs to the likes of Grammy winner Rascal Flatts, Sabrina Carpenter and a host of others.
With that level of success under her belt, Trainor soon signed with Epic Records, where her first single was the massive hit All About That Bass, which was released in June 2014. At first, Epic pitched the song to several other singers to perform, but when there were no takers, Trainor herself sang it. The track, a catchy ode to women who aren’t built like a “stick-figure silicon Barbie doll," received 1,600,000 YouTube views its first month and reached No. 1 on charts across the world.
In the U.S. All About That Bass spent eight weeks at No. 1 - the longest chart reign of an Epic Records single in history - while on its way to selling millions of downloads domestically and overseas. Trainor’s next singles may not have been the overwhelming hit that All About That Bass was, but both Lips Are Movin and Dear Future Husband reached the pop Top 20 and got tens of millions of YouTube views while helping Trainor’s first major album, Title, begin its run at No. 1 around the world.
Trainor was forced to pull out of her 2015 MTrain Tour due to ongoing problems with her vocal cords. She issued a statement on her Instagram account saying, "Sadly I will need to cancel the remainder of my tour and get surgery to finally fix this once and for all. I am devastated, scared, and so sorry." She underwent vocal cord surgery that September.
Trainor was back on the stage with a live tribute to pop/soul icon Lionel Richie at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards telecast in February 2016. Later that night, she won one of the show's marquee awards as Best New Artist.
The following year, the powerhouse singer underwent a second vocal cord operation. Afterward, she said she gave up drinking and changed her eating habits to help ensure good health and career longevity.
In advance of her second major-label studio album, Thank You, Trainor unveiled the hit single No in March 2016. She followed in May with Me Too, one day before the release of Thank You, and dropped Better, featuring Yo Gotti, in August. Meanwhile, the singer embarked on The Untouchable Tour to support the album, which became her second straight to earn platinum certification.
In March 2018, Trainor put out No Excuses, said to be the first single from her upcoming album, Treat Myself. Two more singles, Let You Be Right and Can't Dance, followed on back-to-back days in May. However, while Treat Myself was scheduled for an August arrival, Trainor reported she was pushing back the release date due to a desire to continue writing songs. With the album still unfinished, she instead released an EP, The Love Train, in February 2019.
In January 2018, Trainor joined Sean Diddy Combs, DJ Khaled and record executive Charlie Walk as judges on the music competition series The Four: Battle for Stardom. Enduring Walk's withdrawal from the show over allegations of sexual harassment, The Four was renewed for a second season that year.
Trainor recorded the songs Badass Woman and Run Like the River for the 2019 films The Hustle and Playmobil: The Movie, respectively. She also voiced a fairy godmother in Playmobil: The Movie.
Meghan Trainor was born and raised a Christian and still is today. She grew up attending the Methodist Church with her parents.
Politics
Meghan Trainor has a lack of interest in politics. During the 2016 Presidential elections, Trainor expressed no desire to be involved in the nation’s politics. When asked about Clinton or Trump, she said she would vote for Clinton, then expressed that she didn’t plan on voting and never had.
Views
Trainor is influenced by music from the 1950s and 1960s and is known for her throwback style. Her lyrics frequently refer to modern womanhood, body image, and empowerment.
Trainor has endorsed some charities, including DoSomething, GLAAD, MusiCares, WE Movement and the Ryan Seacrest Foundation, and The Salvation Army. She has made public appearances in charity events such as during WE Day California, and The Hollywood Reporter's 24th annual Women in Entertainment Breakfast, in which she presented three high school girls with full-ride, four-year scholarships to Loyola Marymount University.
Quotations:
"I don't consider myself a feminist, but I'm down for my first opportunity to say something to the world to be so meaningful. If you asked me, 'What do you want to say?' it would be, 'Love yourself more.'"
"With social media, with Instagram and selfies and all these apps that are trying to make you look perfect... it's hard for girls to grow up nowadays with all that stuff."
"I don't read books. I read 'On the Road' in high school, and that was awesome, so I guess that's my favorite book. 'To Kill a Mockingbird,' even though I didn't read it, that's the greatest story. SparkNotes came in when I was in high school, and that was the greatest invention."
Personality
According to Trainor, it only took her eight minutes to write Lips Are Moving. All About That Bass only took 45 minutes to write. This means her two biggest hits were written in just an hour. Trainor said that she was extremely nervous about writing the song All About That Bass, artists like Beyonce and Adele passed on it, so she decided to record it herself.
Trainor has admitted that she is a skilled swimmer; however, she would rather hang out by pools than the beach, and she does not like to tan. However, she does enjoy scuba diving and snorkeling.
Meghan has Nyctophobia, which is a huge fear of the dark.

Connections
On December 22, 2018, Trainor married her boyfriend of 2 years Daryl Sabara in their Los Angeles' home on her 25th birthday. Trainor first met Sabara in 2014 at an LA house party before her rise to fame later that year. Then in 2016, their mutual friend, Chloë Grace Moretz, played matchmaker, setting them up. Sparks flew, and after a year of dating, Sabara proposed to Trainor in front of her family during a trip to Palm Springs in December 2017.
