Selected by the Washington Capitals in the 1991 National Hockey League Entry Draft, Halverson failed to make the parent team He was claimed by the Anaheim Mighty Ducks in the 1993 National Hockey League Expansion Draft, but spent his time mainly in the minors. Halverson returned to the Capitals organization when he signed with them as a free sgent in 1998, and finally had the chance to play for the parent team when he played seventeen games during the 1998-1999 National Hockey League season.
