He played for the Philadelphia Athletics and the Saint Louis Browns in 1908, the Cleveland Naps from 1910 to 1911, and the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1914 to 1915. Smith was also the first head college football coach for The Citadel Bulldogs located in Charleston, South Carolina holding that position for the 1905 season.
