This botanist is denoted by the author transcript Herz. when citing a botanical name. From 1904 to 1912, he was engaged in a series of botanical excursions. Sardinia (1904 and 1906), Ceylon (1905 and 1908) and Bolivia (1907-1908 and 1910-1912).
A leading authority of mosses, he also dealt with the systematics and phytogeography of flowering plants.
As his career progressed, he focused more of his energy towards the classification of liverworts, in particular the family Lejeuneaceae. The plant specific terms herzogiana and herzogii bear his name, two examples being: Frullania herzogiana and Luteolejeunea herzogii.
