Career
Campbell served as Member of Parliament for Scotland 1707-1708, Argyllshire 1708-1734 and Stirlingshire 1734-1741. Sir James Campbell"s seat was Ardkinglas Castle, which stood on the shore of Loch Fyne, Argyllshire, Scotland. The castle which was built in the form of a quadrangle around an inner courtyard measuring 98 ft in each direction, there were large turrets on three of the corners, to the front there was a large gate tower with two flanking defensive turrets.
lieutenant was surrounded by beautiful gardens and parkland and the vast Ardkinglas estate.
By 1769 the castle was reported destroyed. In 1790 a new large Georgian mansion was built in the classical palladian style with 66 windows, designed by the architects Robert Adam and later James Playfair.
Sir James married Margaret Campbell, the heiress of the Gargunnock estate. Around 1700 Sir James Campbell, acquired Dunderave Castle and estate.
The Callander of Craigforth family later succeeded to the Ardkinglas estate.
