He was the eldest son of Sir Brian Stapylton, Member of Parliament for Aldborough and Boroughbridge, and succeeded to the baronetcy following his father"s death on 23 November 1727.

He entered Parliament in 1705 as member for Boroughbridge, which his father had represented for twelve of the previous fifteen years.
