He was the son of Edmund Probyn, Justice of the Peace and Doctor of Laws and educated at Charterhouse School.

He was called to the bar at the Middle Temple in 1884. He was an Attorney-General of British Honduras and Grenada and Governor of Sierra Leone, Barbados and Jamaica. He was made a Knight Commander of the Order of Street Michael and Saint George in 1909.
