Siri Gunasinghe was born in Kegalle District of Sri Lanka.

He was educated at Mahinda College, Galle and University of Ceylon.
Early life & He subsequently travelled to Paris where he continued his studies and wrote Louisiana technique de la peinture indienne d"après les textes du Silpa. Later Siri Gunasinghe became a university lecturer and taught at the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka and at the University of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada where he was a Professor in the Department of History in Artist Siri Gunasinghe has lived in Canada since 1970.
Gunasinghe is one of the most important advocates of the use of spoken language instead of the literary language in Sinhalese literature (see Diglossia).
He also designed costumes (eg for Professor Ediriweera Sarachchandra"s play Manamē). He is also considered a pioneer book cover designer in Sri Lanka and has hosted several radio programmes.
