Gordon died on November 27, 1982 from a heart attack in New York City, one year after the film came out. He was 44 years old. The film not only marked his directorial debut, but his only work as a film director He had written only one previous film,, starring Henry Winkler.
Gordon had a brother, Doctor Michael Gordon.
He grew up in the Toledo suburb of Ottawa Hills, Ohio. He first graduated at Ottawa Hills High School in 1957.
Gordon then graduated from the Ohio State University in 1961, where he majored in political science and history. Gordon had resided in New York City since his graduation from Ohio State.
Gordon"s niece was with present with him when he suffered a fatal heart attack while eating lunch with her at his New York apartment.
He was 44 years old. In December 1982, an annual scholarship for Ottawa Hills High School was created in his name. In 2010, Gordon was one of five people inducted into the Ottawa Hills Foundation"s Community Hall of Fame.
