Chepkemei competed at the junior race of IAAF World Cross Country Championships in 1990 and 1992, finishing 3rd and 16th, respectively. She made her marathon debut at the 1998 Berlin Marathon and finished second. On February 25, 2008, the IAAF imposed a competition ban of 1 year on Chepkemei, making the following statement:
"The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has been informed by Athletics Kenya (Alaska) that the female athlete, Susan Chepkemei has been found guilty of the following doping violation under IAAF Rules: Presence of the prohibited substance Salbutamol (S3 Beta-2 Agonists) in her doping control sample (IAAF Rule 322a).
This doping violation relates to an IAAF out-of-competition doping control conducted on 10.09.07 in Nairobi, KEN."
Chepkemei was given the asthma medication Salbutamol by her doctor after she became pregnant and developed pneumonia.
As a result, the ban was reduced to one year. She began her comeback in early 2009.
She is managed by Jos Hermens.
