Ogsaa blikket kan udtrykke mangeslags følelser; alligevel finder vi ord, hvis grundbetydning er at betragte, som betegnelse for stemninger: beundring og forundring ansees for at høre sammen med græsk dftpéco 'betragter'; roden i agtelse er den samme som i øie; medens det gotiske inweitan har betydningen 'tilbede' (egentlig: se paa, neml. med beundring), bruges det beslegtede latinske invidére om at misunde, hvilket hænger sammen med troen paa det onde øie, som man tillagde, og endnu tillægger, en evne til at skade. Ved sideblik udtrykkes foragt, misundelse og skjælmeri: vi taler om at se skjævt til en, om den skjeløiede misundelse; oldindisk katåksa betegner pigernes skjælmske sideblik.--Rødmen kan skrive sig fra skamfølelse eller fra vrede eller fra sterk iver: det irske ord for at skamme sig (immdergud) betyr egentlig at rødme; hebraisk qånå' 'være ivrig' har oprindelig betydningen 'være høirød'.--Aandedrættet kan besværliggjøres af forskjellige sterke affekter. Vort ord anger er udgaaet fra en ældre betydning sorg (over en begaaet handling); men ved siden heraf havde ordet i ældre dansk ogsaa betydningerne smerte og vrede (heraf engelsk anger vrede); samme ord er latinsk an go r 'sammensnoring af struben, uro, ængstelse, bekymring', omtrent som vort beklemmelse. He started his university studies in 1876 and graduated with an education degree in languages and history in 1882.
After this he taught in Oslo while continuing research, especially on Germanic languages and Nordic mythology, including scholarship stays in Germany and England. He received his doctorate in 1888 with the dissertation Om nomina agentis i det oldnorske Sprog (Nomina Agentis in Old Norwegian). He became a professor of Germanic philology at the University of Oslo in 1897.
As a university instructor, especially a German instructor, he strove for more practical and modern language teaching.
He published a number of works on linguistics, philology, and cultural history, especially in Nordisk Arkiv for Filologi and in materials published by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters in Oslo. He is particularly remembered for his etymological dictionary of the Norwegian and Danish language, which he wrote in cooperation with Alf Torp.
He chaired the commission that recommended/prepared the orthography revision of 1917.
